This Sunday we studied Matthew 10-12. I’m trying to summarize a comment made by someone at church:

It’s actually a pretty radical thing to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Think of Socrates and how he was put to death for having different ideas. Imagine the hate and ridicule which came from being a follower of Christ. He was not the Messiah the Jews were expecting to come and set them free and make political changes. He came to shake things up and make spiritual changes. He told His disciples that they would be hated of all men and persecuted and likely killed. That households would be divided because of His teachings. Not exactly a popular religion. He didn’t come to teach us necessarily what we wanted to hear but he came to teach us the higher law.

Matthew 5: 43-44
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
